How CAF AFCON qualification works
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) organises qualifying for each edition of the tournament. For AFCON 2027, the main qualifying stage involves 48 teams, including the three co-hosts, drawn into 12 groups of four. Each team plays six matches, home and away against the other three sides in its group.
In most groups the top two teams qualify for the finals. The groups that contain Kenya, Uganda or Tanzania work differently: because the host nation already has a guaranteed place, only the best-placed team other than the host goes through. The format can change from one edition to the next, so CAF's official qualification page is the reference for any future tournament.
Why the draw matters
Before the groups are played, CAF holds a qualifying draw with seeding pots. For the 2027 draw the pots were based on FIFA rankings, so the strongest-ranked teams were spread across different groups and could not meet each other at this stage. South Africa was reported to be in Pot 1 for the AFCON 2027 qualifying draw, which kept it apart from the other top seeds, though a group can still contain awkward away trips.
The qualifying schedule
CAF spreads the qualifiers across three FIFA international windows, when clubs must release their players. For AFCON 2027, matchdays 1 and 2 are scheduled for 21 September to 6 October 2026, matchdays 3 and 4 for 9 to 17 November 2026, and matchdays 5 and 6 for 22 to 30 March 2027. Using international windows means Bafana Bafana can call up players from PSL clubs and from clubs abroad without clashing with domestic league fixtures.
South Africa's record in AFCON qualifying has been mixed. As hosts in 1996 the team qualified automatically and won the title, but it has also missed several finals since then, including the 2012 and 2017 tournaments. In its most recent campaigns Bafana Bafana have again been competitive at the finals, finishing third at the 2023 tournament played in Côte d'Ivoire in early 2024.
For fans the practical takeaway is to follow the group table rather than single results: two home wins and a draw away can be enough in one group and not in another. Fixture dates and venues are confirmed by CAF and SAFA, and both publish updates as each qualifying window approaches.
